January 31, 2007Windows Express Installation in Parallels
January 29, 2007I just used the Windows Express Installation in Parallels to install Vista on my Mac. I supplied the initial information and went downstairs to watch Battlestar Galactica. When I came back upstairs, Vista was booted and waiting to install Parallels Tools on the VM.
The only critique I can come up with is that the drivers aren’t signed, so there is a prompt every time a driver installs. So far I’ve gotten five I think. Other than that, it seems to have been a flawless install. There went an unprompted, automatic restart. Maybe not so flawless after all.
I’m a big fan of Parallels. I work in a very Windows-centric environment, but my primary machine is a Mac Pro. I did it as a proof of concept, but it has been great for me. I make a backup of my virtual hard drive periodically, so I rarely fear all of the testing that I do.
Vista just came back up from the restart and logged in properly. Not bad at all. My first order of business: Windows Update.
Windy day
January 28, 2007In honor of the wind whipping around our house right now, have a video of soccer player getting pelted by billboards that the wind is throwing at them.
1998: Starcraft was released today
January 28, 2007I lost most of my free time in college to StarCraft marathons over the LAN that was installed my sophomore year. Most of my favorite gaming memories are starting a game late and finishing later.
This Day in Gaming, January 28th – Kotaku:
1998: Blizzard releases Starcraft for PC in the US.
Last day of garage sale
January 27, 2007We just packed up the last carload of stuff for the garage sale tomorrow. I can’t wait to see all of this stuff gone, but I sort of hate to see it end. I’ve really enjoyed the last couple of weeks, but I’m sure I’ll be glad when it’s all over with.
A few things I learned along the way:
- Things can never be cheap enough for some people.
- Price everything higher than what you want for it.
- Presentation is important. Most people don’t dig through bins or boxes.
- Don’t let your feelings about something cloud your sale price. This can be high or low.
- Most folks like to negotiate. Have fun with it.
- The item doesn’t have to sell to the first customer who asks. Patience is the key.
- If it is a multi-family garage sale, try not to sell similar items if they are high dollar. Your buddy can undercut your price.
- Price everything ahead of time. The price can start way too low if there is a customer in front of you at the time.
- Know your price floor for the items ahead of time. If you won’t take less that $5, you should know that before you start.
Park the car
January 24, 2007Another complete waste of time. This little Shockwave-based game is just as the title says: parking the car. A lot of fun for ten or fifteen minutes though.
I’m tired
January 24, 2007Just got back from watching my Kentucky Wildcats fold like a paper napkin at Georgia. Good night and good luck.
A great night of television
January 23, 2007I just watched Heroes, American Idol, and Studio 60 back to back to back. I know, American Idol is out of character for me, but I love watching the terrible performers overestimate their talent. It’s always quite fun.
If you aren’t watching Heroes or Studio 60, I think you’re missing out. Heroes would be very hard to pick up in the middle, but Studio 60 is episodic enough to check out.
The burning question
January 21, 2007Apparently everyone wants to know how much NFL referees make. I’ve had more than close to fifty hits on this post every day there is a playoff game.
Go Colts! (and Bears)
January 21, 2007Congrats to the Colts and the Bears for making it to the Super Bowl. Both teams deserve to be there, though the Bears won in much more convincing fashion.
It brings to mind the Raiders vs Buccaneers Super Bowl a few years ago. It is a classic offense-oriented team vs defense-oriented team struggle that will most likely be decided by the parts of the teams that no one will be talking about.
I think it will be close since temperature should not be a factor. That probably means a 20 point blowout since I said that.

HBO Acquires A Song of Fire and Ice
January 17, 2007There is finally a reason for me to subscribe to HBO. I will do it for this show. It’s the perfect medium for such a complex story. Can you tell I’m excited?
HBO Acquires A Song of Fire and Ice – ComingSoon.net:
HBO has acquired the rights to turn George R.R. Martin’s bestselling fantasy series “A Song of Fire and Ice” into a dramatic series to be written and executive produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, reports Variety.

January 16, 2007Microsoft’s Vista Family Pack
January 15, 2007David sent over a link to this article by Mary Jo Foley about the new Vista Family pack model. I applaud Microsoft for making some effort there. It is better than nothing. It’s also nowhere near as good as the Apple Family Pack plan for Mac OS.
There are two key differences that affect this. First is Microsoft’s obscene range of OS versions, second is price. I get to pay $399 for Vista Ultimate, then I can get two copies of the lesser Vista Home edition for a discounted rate, somewhere between $50-$100. Apple’s Family pack is a flat $199 for five Macs. I know you can argue about the frequency of Apple’s OS upgrades, but easy is easy.
Its better than nothing, but not better than the competition.
One of my favorite quotes
January 13, 2007Voltaire Quotes:
I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it.
