A soup that eats like a heart attack

June 29, 2006

Well, its not exactly a soup, but it does have sauce. Neatorama shared some nastiness from Armour, makers of everyone’s favorite meat products. This time around, its pork brains in milk gravy, packing a whopping 3500mg of cholesterol, which comes to 1170% of the recommended daily value. Yummy!

New show this fall: Heroes

June 29, 2006

Its a little early to start thinking about fall tv shows, but I’m getting a little excited about Heroes. Basically, normal people develop superhuman powers. It seems to be a very interesting take on standard comic-book fare. Heroes will be on Monday nights at 9 PM.

SCI FI Wire | The News Service of the SCI FI Channel:
Larter added: “The first season is about understanding what is happening to us. The characters will end up meeting each other and figuring it out, but it’s not right on the nose. You don’t know what is happening, and I think it will make audiences relate, because it could happen to any of us.

Transformers: The Movie teaser trailer released

June 29, 2006

Teasers don’t usually excite me all that much. This one doesn’t really either. It looks ok, but there is nothing but a transformer shadow. Now that’s a tease for you.

I grew up on the Transformers cartoon and had a ton of the toys. As a matter of fact, I still have them. E-Bay here I come!

Go see Superman Returns

June 28, 2006

I want to preface this by saying that I’m not a big Superman fan. I liked the original movies when I was growing up, but find them a bit cheesy now.

I went to see Superman Returns tonight, mainly because I was invited to. I thought the trailer looked pretty good, if a bit animated, but nothing really caught my attention. In a lot of ways, I was afraid it would be a kryptonite filled summer popcorn movie. Fortunately, I was wrong.

I can possibly emphasize how much I think Bryan Singer made this movie what it was. It certainly had the same character emphasis found in X-Men and X2, and The Usual Suspects for that matter. I never really cared for Superman as a character because he is too powerful, unless he is around Kryptonite, in which case, he is useless. he movie certainly has that element in it, but it isn’t really the point of the story. Honestly, neither is Lex Luthor and the “main” plot line. Its really about the character’s relationships.

I do need to touch on the effects momentarily, since that’s what all of the advertising and clips are about. All told, they were very well done. It wasn’t an over-animated mess like The Incredible Hulk. The action scenes were very well done. The only animation that truly got was the Superman floating in the air with the camera spinning around him. I’ve seen that enough already. Really.

I don’t have any serious complaints about the movie. It was entertaining and held my attention the entire time. It was a very fast two and a half hours. Superman Returns is a very accessible movie for most everyone, even a person who doesn’t prefer comic book or action movies. I think the story is compelling enough to stand on its own and the production quality was top notch in almost every way. Have fun and bring popcorn.

Wolverine in 2007?

June 28, 2006

I’m a little suprised that Fox would push this out so fast, but maybe Jackman didn’t want to grow the ‘burns twice.

Ken Jennings should be your hero

June 27, 2006

Why? Because he has a Big Styrofoam Head, of course!

Ken is the man who set a record for most money won on a game show when he won 74 consecutive episodes of Jeopardy!

Kentucky has a state-wide academic competition organization that my high school participated in. One of the things that we did to prepare for meets was watch Jeopardy!. You would be amazed how much you can learn from watching Jeopardy! every night. I got pretty good at it over time, but not even close to Mr. Baldridge, our coach. I don’t know if he could beat Ken – Brad Rutter did, so its possible – but it would have been fun to watch.

I’ve never known anyone who knew as many things about as many things as Mr. Baldridge.

Deep fried burger?

June 22, 2006

I’ve seen lots of deep fried stuff. I live in the south. We’ll deep fry anything. That said, I’m not surprised that someone decided to deep fry a hamburger. I can even imagine what level of disgusting you would feel after trying to eat that.

Nintendo DS Lite initial impressions

June 19, 2006

I’m an early adopter. I really can’t help it. I’ve gotten countless things, especially video game systems, very early on in their lifecycles. The original Nintendo DS was among those and has been very reliable for me over the last few years. When I heard the Nintendo DS Lite was coming out, I thought “Why would I want one of those?”. So of course, I got one.

Amazingly enough, I let the battery charge up before I turned it on. I don’t think I’ve ever done that. It’s kind of odd to have a new gadget sitting there, looking at you from across the room, and not use it at all. I’m still not sure how I managed.

All in all, its a nice redesign. It definitely is smaller and lighter, but the change in size did not make it harder to hold for the hour or so that I played New Super Mario Brothers. The screens really are that much brighter and the sound seems more crisp somehow, though I can’t quite put my finger on it. I like the new locking mechanism for the stylus, as well as the new stylus design. At least I think its a new stylus design. It seems a bit thicker than the original, though I can’t say for sure, since I never really used the stylus much with my original.

Personally, I think its worth upgrading. If you’re a first-time DS buyer, I certainly would suggest that you buy this over the original, if only because of the screen upgrades. If you already have a DS and are happy with it, you can pass, but If you pick one up and play for a while, you might wish you hadn’t.

Would you like a NewsHour-themed birthday people?

June 18, 2006

wcco.com – 3-Year-Old’s Birthday Party Theme: ‘NewsHour’:

So there’s a three year old child named Henry. Henry has watched NewsHour with Jim Lehrer every day since he was born. It seems completely logical that he wanted that as his birthday theme.

The most incredible thing about this video is that he knows more about figures in American politics than most people off the street. Can you name our Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense? He can.

Another great thing is his big present this year. What was it? A personally autographed picture of Jim Lehrer.

Do you like to crochet?

June 17, 2006

I don’t, but my wife and mother both do. In honor of their passion for all things crocheted, I proudly present fellow WordPress blog What Not To Crochet.

Like I said, I don’t crochet, but some of these are just plain funny.
